On a Deadline

I wish I had more of a post for today, dear readers, but I’m on a deadline. I’m the Newsletter Editor for the Ottawa Knitting Guild and today was the day the November newsletter had to go out. I was a little behind and it took some considerable effort on my part but the thing is done, PDF’d and winging its way to email inboxes across the city. My brain is toast.

I have not gotten a lot of “real” (read: school) work done this week. I don’t know if it was the time change or this newsletter deadline or my general inability to go to bed before 1am or wake up before 9am, but I haven’t gone near my research. This is the real reason grad students get behind: it is so difficult to force yourself to work on a project, with no supervision, day after day without getting distracted. There isn’t any paycheck to keep me on task, and no boss looking over my should cracking a whip. Just a general, vague sense of responsibility and desire to achieve. And that is hardly motivating at 8am.

My energy levels are low these days, and I think that is a big part of the problem. I’m going to work on that for the next month, trying to balance out my sleep schedule with every-reducing levels of daylight. Trying to work in a little exercise without feeling like that is one more distraction. Giving myself permission to unwind in the evening as long as I don’t fall into a 4-hour TV watching binge. It’s a delicate balance.

A balance that I will work on more….starting tomorrow. For now, it’s time to get together with my fellow students and break out the retro videos games. There will be fun, prizes and (later) good food and drink. And I’m going to enjoy every minute of it.
